Two of my favorite things are bourbon and brownies. So I figured why not put them together? Bourbon adds an extra rich layer to an already delicious brownie. These decadent bourbon brownies are nut free, delicious, and perfect for a special occasion.

Why You’ll Love Them

Bourbon brownies are easy to bake from scratch. A few staple pantry ingredients, plus some bourbon are all you need to whip up this delicious dessert. There is just something about homemade brownies that scream love.

Speaking of love, bourbon brownies are perfect for Valentine’s Day, or. other special occasions. New Year’s, anniversaries. Bourbon brownies would be great for Father’s Day too.

These bourbon brownies are a thick, chewy style brownie. They hold up well to travel and are even great for care packages.

The bourbon adds a richness to the batter, without making it too boozy. You don’t have to like bourbon to appreciate the hint of spiciness it brings to these brownies.

And don’t worry, all the alcohol cooks off, so these are safe for kids. (Although, you could add 1/4 cup of bourbon to the chocolate buttercream frosting for an extra-special treat. But beware, since you don’t cook the frosting, there will be alcohol in it.)

How to Make Bourbon Brownies

Pan of bourbon brownies with Valentine sprinkles

Bourbon brownies are easy to make and come together in just ten minutes.

Start by preheat your oven to 350 F. I like to use an oven thermometer when I bake because my ovens are very unreliable. Then prepare a 9 inch baking pan. Line the pan with parchment paper. Sometimes when baking brownies I also spray the parchment with nonstick baking spray.

Prep your dry ingredients in a small bowl, Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 cup cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt and whisk together. Set aside.

In a large bowl, combine sugar and butter and use a hand mixer to, beat until light and creamy. This should take about 3-5 minutes. Then add 1 teaspoon vanilla, 2 eggs, and 1/4 cup bourbon and beat well. I like to use good quality bourbon because the flavor really comes through as the brownies bake.

Once the wet ingredients are well combined, slowly add the dry mixture to bowl and beat on low speed until well combined. Do not overheat.

Use a wooden spoon or a rubber scraper to foil in 1/4 cup of quality semi-sweet chocolate pieces. The bourbon brownie batter will be thick.

Spread the batter into your prepared 9″ baking pan and bake 25-30 minutes in a 35o degree oven. You want to bake just until the bourbon brownies are set. Do not overbake.

Cool on a rack and cut into 16 bars.

Enjoy!

These bourbon brownies are delicious as is. Simply cut and serve or add a sprinkle of confectioners sugar. The sweetness contrasts perfectly with the bitterness of the dark chocolate and the spiciness of the bourbon.

But I love to frost bourbon brownies with chocolate buttercream frosting. And I love to add a little dash of bourbon to the frosting too. Add some holiday sprinkles to make them festive for any occasion.

Bourbon brownies taste great with a cup of tea, coffee or milk. They are perfect for dinner parties and weeknight desserts.
